Elite Facts

Before purchasing a solar system, these are some of the most common questions we get from our homeowners:

How do I know if solar will work for my home?

The best orientation for a solar electric system is on a South facing roof, because the sun is always in the southern part of the Colorado sky. However, rooves that face East or West are also acceptable. Flat, horizontally-oriented roofs also work well for solar systems because the solar electric array can be mounted either on the roof facing the sky or on “tilt kits” toward the south at an optimal angle. If a rooftop cannot be used, a solar electric array can also be placed on the ground using a fixed “Ground Mount” to create the best orientation and tilt for your location. Every home is different, so we will always work with you to determine the best design for your situation.

What are the financial benefits of going solar?

When you install a solar energy system, you save money on your electricity bills and protect yourself against rising electricity rates in the future. How much you can save depends on the utility rates and solar policies in your area, but going solar is a smart investment regardless of where you live. There is always value in going solar.

How does solar increase my property values?

Studies have shown that homes with solar energy systems sell for more than homes without them. However, your property value will only increase if you own, rather than lease, your solar panel system. In most parts of the country, going solar will actually increase your property value more than a kitchen renovation.

What is the Solar Investment Tax Credit (ITC)?

The video says 30% because the credit has decreased and is continuing to decrease! Take advantage of this credit before it goes away!

The Solar ITC encourages the use of renewable energy by providing a twenty six percent (26%) tax credit to owners of an energy property that meets established performance and quality standards. A tax credit is a dollar-for-dollar reduction in the amount of income tax you would otherwise owe.

While most customers who qualify for Solar Century Programs have large enough tax appetite to take advantage of the full tax credit, you should consult your tax advisor for advice on your specific situation.

How much does solar panel maintenance cost?

Solar panel systems are made of durable tempered glass and require little to no maintenance for the 25 to 35 years that they will generate power. In most cases, you don’t even need to clean your solar panels regularly. If something does happen, most equipment manufacturers include warranties, which will be discussed more thoroughly during your consultation with one of our specialists.

What is "Net Metering" and how does it work?

Net metering is a billing mechanism that gives you credit for the electricity your solar energy system is adding to the grid. During the daylight hours, your system will generally produce more energy than your home is using. As a result, the excess energy is transferred to the grid which causes your electricity meter to run backwards. This acts as a credit against the electricity consumed at night or when your home’s use exceeds the system’s output. No electricity ever goes to waste, and it protects you from extra electrical charges.
